TRIMDON UNITED NEWSLETTER FOURTEEN

Trimdon U13 v Grangetown U13         away               09 Dec 2007   1.30pm ko

A big match for Trimdon against a Grangetown team sitting second in the league but who have been beaten by teams we have already put away so expectations were of a decent win. Arriving at Grangetown it was with surprise that we were directed to a small sided size pitch not much bigger than a five a side pitch and it soon became clear that the pitch was so crowded by players that no-one could ever play flowing football on there and this played havoc with our passing play. 2 minutes in and Grangetown get a free kick 20 yards out which is defended well and the ball pushed out to Tom Lawson who breaks down the left side, quickly crosses in towards Sam Noble but the Keeper is alert and cuts out the ball. 6 minutes in and Grangetown somehow scramble the ball into the heart of Trimdon;s defence where Jack Fannon unluckily scuffs the ball and the striker rounds him to score an early goal. A minute later Sam strikes a good free kick at the other end but the wall does its job and the danger is cleared. On 10 minutes the cabaret arrives in the form of a small terrier running all over the pitch attacking the ball and nipping at some of the players. Eventually someone manages to get it away after a few attempts. Dogged work from Ryan Willis in midfield on 13 minutes pushes the ball to Luke Walton and then to Sam who shoots just wide of the post. Grangetown are having some good attacks down both wings stopped solidly and decisively by both Danny Williams and Luke Casson who both let nothing past them all game. The game is really scrappy with no room on the pitch to play football but 20 minutes in Luke Walton has a great break through on goal unceremoniously halted by being hauled by the shirt from the Grangetown defender. Sam’s resultant free kick is hit hard but well saved. The ball shoots up the other end and Grangetown get a corner from which they score a second goal. On 28 minutes Trimdon get some payment for their work when from a throw in Luke Walton works hard, forces his way through and scores - good goal Luke. 5 minutes remaining in this half and Trimdon are dominating now for a spell and in the last minute Luke Walton has another break on goal just saved. In the dying seconds of the first half however, Grangetown push up and have shot on goal which hits the bar and drops down only for the striker to pick up the rebound and score. Half time 1 - 3.

Second half started in the same vein as the first one with very scrappy uncoordinated play from both teams. Sam gets a early free kick from 25 yards (about where the half way line is on this tiny pitch) and drives it across the face of goal - no-one could get on the end of it. 6 minutes in and Grangetown have a good effort well saved by Scotty who came on at half time in goal. It feels like it isn’t our day when another scrappy drive from Grangetown ends in the back of the Trimdon net - nothing smooth about this game. 10 minutes in Grangetown get a corner and this time score a good headed goal to make it 5 - 1. Another goalmouth scramble in Trimdons 6 yard box two minutes later sees Scotty make 4 or 5 great saves in the space of 6 seconds - very brave keeping. 20 minutes into the second half and Sam has a great strike from 25 yards fly into the net. 5 - 2 now. A minute later and a great piece of play from Trimdon sees Luke Casson release Casper Summerbell who puts Sam through - Sam shoots hard but the keeper is up to it and saves well. Some end to end football and chances from both teams, however it is Grangetown who take their next chance from a corner and score yet again. And so the final score 6 - 2 to Grangetown who had the advantage of playing on this pitch week in week out and are aware that you can’t run with the ball on a pitch this size and need to pass the ball early which is what they did to good effect. Trimdon had their moments though with the strikers having their chances so we could have got something from the game but we didn’t adapt well as a team to the tiny pitch. Looking forward to the return leg on a full size pitch and expecting a different result.

Man of the match was Luke Casson who tackled solidly every time and distributed well when needed. There were also very good performances from Lanky, Danny and Ryan who all got stuck right in to the Grangetown lads.
