Would you like to live here? Hidden away behind the tidy front streets a lot of houses are in very poor condition, empty and boarded up, whilst others are still being occupied by tenants unable to move home unless the local council rehouses them. .
Whilst plans are in place to rehouse those concerned and renovate the area, tenants were paying in excess of £45 per week rent plus Council Tax to live here. Other residents in Beach Grove and nearby who have bought their homes must wait for Easington District Council to actually do something about the abysmal state of the area.
Unbelievably, the partially disabled tenant of 41 Beach Grove (right ) recently received a letter from EDC demanding that he tidied his garden, even though the surrounding council-owned properties were boarded up and scattered with debris. For this, he was actually paying £44 per week rent plus £60 per month Council Tax. Email messages to the departments concerned were not acknowledged, even though they appear prominently on official letterheads. Nick Hardy from East Durham Homes did at least reply after prompting. In the meantime, the tenant decided to move into the Sedgefield area to leave these conditions behind. E.D.C. intends to demolish the houses shown in the photographs, as well as others nearby, and replace them with new bungalows. These were originally meant to be in place by summer 2004, but it seems that may now be a little optimistic, as work has just started. *1* A letter dated 16th June was been circulated to residents, stating that demolition and work on eight new bungalows on the Ash Grove site would commence in July. *2* Demolition work is now scheduled to start 23rd August 2004
Epilogue :
April 2005 The newly completed bungalows (pictured) are a major improvement for the Beech Grove area, and Trimdon Station in general. Lets hope improvements of this calibre continue for the people of Trimdon Station.
