Another Rubbish Dump?

>Latest news articles<

Premier Waste Management has ambitions for a major landfill site ( a rubbish dump to you and me ) in the countryside between Trimdon, Wingate and Wheatley Hill.

Residents of Wingate have already voiced strong disapproval of these plans, as the site will be very close to housing at the north-west corner of the village.
What is not immediately apparent to people in Trimdon is just how close it is to our area.

Anyone who has travelled past the landfill site between Kelloe and Quarrington Hill on a summers day will hardly have failed to notice the unique odour produced by these facilities. Or on a windy day watch to see how far airborne litter can travel - the wire mesh screening seems inadequate in containing it if there’s much more than a breeze. Residents in Kelloe had major problems with rats, which they attributed to the landfill site. The proposed site appears to be much larger from the outset, with the possibility of it being extended when needed at some future date.

Durham County Council has already buried millions of tons of rubbish in our immediate area over the years - the north side of Wingate Quarry, now our nature reserve, was filled only recently, and up to the 60’s the rubbish was tipped to the south of the nature reserve, just outside Deaf Hill.
There must be plenty of disused industrial land in the area which is far more suited to waste disposal, rather than ruining good farming land and its neighbouring villages.
If you would rather not have a development of this type on your doorstep, now is the time to let the local council know, before it’s too late.

Latest Wingate Against Refuse update 1st April
Plans Finally Withdrawn

It's Friday 1st April and Premier Waste have finally decided to withdraw their controversial plans to build the Wingate Grange Farm landfill (and it's no April fool!).
Wingate Against Refuse would like to thank everybody for all their hard work over the past few months. Despite being told that this was a 'done deal' from the outset, we have shown that people can make a difference.
We will be aiming to have a celebratory party in the near future and will email you to notify you of date, time  and venue. We all look forward to seeing you then!
