At Sedgefield Locality Carers Centre we work with family carers who provide care for friends or relatives w ho are unable to manage alone due to age, disability or illness.
Many of our carers care seven days a week day and night and get very little or no respite. We are constantly looking to recruit new volunteers in the Trimdon area to help out with our volunteer transport service. Carers are faced with stress, exhaustion and anxiety with the added problem of accessing transport to get themselves or the person they are caring for to the numerous medical appointments that they need to attend.
As well as our transport service we also operate a sitting/befriending service.
Our Volunteer Sitters provide 2-4 hours a week sitting with the cared for people while their carer goes out for some well earned respite - whether it’s to attend appointments, pick up some shopping or just go for a walk. Sitters are not expected to provide any personal care, they simply befriend the person being cared for, have a chat watch TV read a magazine or play games with them. Sometimes when getting out and about is difficult the volunteer is the only other person that they see and both carer and cared for are always extremely grateful for the service.
